About the role: What's in the Box

The position is part of the Active Journey Alliance, which has the mission to maximize retention of active customers. Active Journey Alliance helps customers to create habits with our products, manage their subscription, order the products they love and provide help in the face of errors.

Backend Engineers assume development and operational responsibility for the HelloFresh platform that serves millions globally to deliver the best experience for our customers and internal users.

At HelloTech, flexibility and cross-functional collaboration are core to how we work. While this role is aligned to a specific Alliance, strong candidates may also be considered for opportunities across different teams or projects.

What you’ll do: The Recipe

• Work on of the architecture, design, development, deployment and operations of the microservices you will develop, using DevOps practices, pair programming and other cutting edge methodologies
• Be active, solution-oriented member of autonomous, cross-functional agile teams collaborating with Product Owners, Front-end Engineers, Designers, and Business Intelligence teams
• Having an in-depth understanding of HelloFresh’s core product and architecture, and act as ambassador for software solutions offering support and mentorship to colleagues
• Work with state-of-the-art technologies like Golang, Kotlin, Kafka, Docker, Kubernetes and more

What you’ll bring: The Ingredients

• Strong background in backend development, with a focus on microservices and distributed systems
• Meaningful experience using AI coding agents (e.g., Claude Code, Cursor, Copilot) as part of your regular workflow. You use AI agents as thought partners to onboard on unfamiliar codebases and  navigate new areas of the code. You are developing a feel for how the way you frame tasks for AI tools affects the quality of results, and for where AI assistance needs closer supervision. You are curious about how and why AI tools fail and are building habits around verification.
• Proven ability to build event-driven architectures using messaging technologies such as RabbitMQ, Kafka, or AWS SQS/SNS
• Proficiency with JVM languages and a willingness to learn Golang is also welcome
• Practical knowledge of Docker, container orchestration tools like Kubernetes, and CI/CD implementation
• Solid foundation in testing practices, including both unit and end-to-end testing
• Deep understanding of relational databases
• Familiarity with MongoDB, and/or GraphQL is a plus
