As our Tax Manager, you’ll play a critical role in leading and scaling Upwork’s global tax compliance and reporting functions. This is an exciting opportunity to ensure operational excellence in a complex, high-growth environment. You will own core deliverables tied to financial reporting and compliance while also helping guide process improvements and automation efforts. Responsibilities

• Lead the preparation and review of federal and state income tax filings, ensuring timely and accurate compliance across domestic and international entities.
• Manage quarterly and annual tax provision processes, including ASC 740 reporting and audit support.
• Collaborate cross-functionally to assess the tax impact of business initiatives, ensuring alignment with regulatory requirements and internal policies.
• Develop and implement process improvements for tax workflows, leveraging AI and automation tools to enhance accuracy and efficiency.
• Monitor evolving tax legislation, analyze potential impact, and propose action plans to leadership.
• Mentor and manage members of the tax team, fostering a culture of continuous improvement, ownership, and growth.
• Partner with external advisors and internal stakeholders during audits, transactions, and tax planning initiatives.

What it takes to catch our eye

• 5+ years of progressive tax experience, ideally in both public accounting and in-house corporate settings.
• Expertise in U.S. federal, state, and international tax compliance and provision processes, including ASC 740.
• Strong project management skills with the ability to prioritize multiple deadlines and lead cross-functional initiatives.
• Demonstrated proficiency using AI tools to streamline tax-related tasks such as data extraction, research, and documentation.
• Proven track record of identifying and implementing process improvements in a high-growth or tech-driven environment.

The annual base salary range for this position  is displayed below. The range displayed reflects the minimum and maximum salary for this position, and individual base pay will depend on your skills, qualifications, experience, and location. Additionally, this position is eligible for the annual bonus plan or sales incentive plan and eligibility to participate in our long term equity incentive program.

$114,250—$162,750 USD
