SENIOR SOFTWARE ENGINEER - REPORTING PLATFORM

This role sits at the core of Smartly’s data platform, where we build the systems that power performance reporting for some of the world’s largest and most influential brands.

You will join the Bobby Tables team, building the software behind Smartly’s performance analytics. Our systems ingest, process, and serve tens of billions of data points from advertising platforms worldwide, turning fragmented, high-volume data into a fast, reliable, and flexible reporting experience.

As a Senior Software Engineer, you will tackle challenging distributed systems problems at scale. You will design and build backend services, improve the performance and reliability of critical systems, and develop robust integrations with a constantly changing ecosystem of advertising platforms. You will make architectural decisions, tackle complex technical trade-offs, and help ensure our systems remain maintainable as both their scale and capabilities grow.

You will have significant technical ownership and influence over how these systems evolve. Your work will directly shape the platform that global brands use to understand their advertising performance and make decisions in real time.

WHAT YOU WILL DO

\* Design and build the reporting engine that enables users to create flexible analytical views across their advertising data

\* Solve complex backend engineering challenges around performance, reliability, and large-scale analytical workloads

\* Design clean interfaces and abstractions that make it easy to integrate new advertising channels into a cohesive platform

\* Own technical decisions and drive software from design through production across our backend stack, including Ruby, TypeScript, Kafka, ClickHouse, and PostgreSQL/Citus

\* Improve the architecture and engineering practices that keep our systems maintainable and resilient as they grow in scale and complexity

\* Mentor other engineers, contribute to technical direction, and help raise the engineering bar across the team

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

\* Experience with complex backend systems: You have built and operated large-scale, highly available software systems and are comfortable reasoning about performance, reliability, and distributed systems

\* Strong database fundamentals: You understand relational databases and query performance, and ideally have experience with analytical or OLAP workloads. Experience with PostgreSQL, ClickHouse, or similar technologies is a plus

\* Distributed and asynchronous processing: You have experience designing systems that handle concurrent background workloads, asynchronous processing, or event-driven architectures using technologies such as Kafka

\* Strong software design skills: You care deeply about abstractions, interfaces, testing, and maintainability, and know how to keep complex systems understandable as they evolve

\* Technical ownership: You are hands-on and comfortable taking ambiguous, technically challenging problems from exploration and design through to production

\* Collaborative leadership: You communicate clearly, work effectively across engineering teams, and help other engineers grow through mentoring, design discussions, and thoughtful technical feedback

\* Bonus: Experience with or interest in query generation, abstract syntax trees (ASTs), compiler concepts, or domain-specific languages (DSLs) is a plus
