Director of Engineering Partnerships
Summary
Storable’s R&D organization relies on a significant contractor workforce across multiple vendors. As we scale, we need a dedicated leader to bring clarity, structure, and accountability to how contractor engineers are deployed, measured, and optimized.
This is not a procurement role.
This is not a traditional people management role.
This is a strategic, technical operator who can partner directly with Engineering leadership to ensure our blended FTE + contractor model drives measurable delivery outcomes, cost transparency, and long-term scalability.
What You’ll Own
You will design and lead our contractor governance strategy across engineering.
That includes:
- Establishing clear productivity and performance KPIs for third-party engineering teams
- Defining and enforcing SLAs aligned to engineering delivery standards
- Evaluating contractor effectiveness across multiple vendors
- Partnering with VPs and Directors of Engineering to assess where contractors are accelerating outcomes, and where they are not
- Creating visibility into total cost of ownership and contractor ROI
- Recommending vendor consolidation, renegotiation, conversion to FTE, or exit strategies when necessary
- Ensuring contractor onboarding, access, security, and operational alignment are consistent and scalable
- Building a repeatable governance model that balances speed, accountability, and cost discipline
You will influence engineering leaders without direct authority. Success depends on credibility, clarity, and structured thinking.
What Success Looks Like
Within 12 months:
- Contractor performance is measured consistently across teams
- Vendor relationships are rationalized and strategically managed
- Engineering leadership has visibility into delivery velocity vs contractor spend
- Contractor headcount aligns intentionally to product priorities
- Engineering leaders trust the model rather than work around it
What We’re Looking For
You likely bring a hybrid background that includes:
- A foundation in software engineering or technical program leadership
- Experience operating inside blended FTE + contractor environments
- Direct ownership of contractor governance, vendor performance, or engineering workforce strategy
- Comfort defining delivery KPIs (velocity, predictability, quality, cost efficiency)
- Experience having hard conversations around performance and vendor accountability
- Ability to speak both “engineering” and “business” fluently
What This Role Is Not
- Pure vendor procurement
- Headcount administration
- A delivery manager role running sprint ceremonies
- A people manager of large direct reports
This is a systems-level engineering workforce optimization role.
