What You’ll Do:

As an Senior Engineering Manager in Payments - Risk, you will lead the vision and execution for the core risk services that facilitate fiat monetary transactions on the platform. You will sit at the intersection of high-scale distributed systems and machine learning, building the architecture that protects a multi-billion dollar economy. You will not only drive the technical roadmap for risk detection but also shape the long-term vision for how Roblox’s economy grows with financial safety. This role is of extremely high importance, directly impacting Roblox's revenue, margins and user experience globally. You will be working directly with a number of cross-functional partners from Product teams, all the way to Finance and Accounting, influencing our business growth direction.

Specifically, your team will be responsible for the mission-critical systems that handle:

• Real-Time Risk & Fraud Decisioning: Architecting and maintaining low-latency engines that evaluate billions of data points in milliseconds to approve, challenge, or block transactions at the point of purchase.
• Automated Chargeback & Dispute Management: Building the infrastructure to automate the lifecycle of payment disputes, leveraging machine learning to improve win rates and protect the platform’s revenue from friendly fraud and regional abuse.
• AML & Compliance Orchestration: Developing systemic controls for compliance workflows, ensuring that all value movements meet global regulatory standards without introducing user friction.
• Risk Feature Store & Backtesting Infrastructure: Owning the data pipelines and simulation environments that allow Data Scientists and Engineers to prototype, backtest, and deploy new risk models into production with zero downtime.

You will:

• Lead the Domain: Own the long-term health, roadmap, and execution of the Economic Risk across Roblox.
• Manage Team Direction & Delivery: Oversee the daily execution of the engineering roadmap, ensuring the team efficiently delivers high-quality, reliable code on time.
• Ensure Cross-Functional Collaboration: Act as the primary engineering liaison, collaborating closely with Product Management, Finance, Legal/Compliance, and Risk teams to align on requirements, prioritize features, and ensure regulatory adherence (e.g., PCI DSS).
• Define Architectural Strategy: Set the long-term technical vision and architectural roadmap for the team and underlying services to support billions of secure transactions globally. Define and implement the engineering standards that ensure a consistently high quality bar across the group.
• Grow and cultivate an Impactful Team: Attract, hire, mentor, and coach top-tier software engineers, fostering a culture of ownership, engineering excellence, and continuous learning within the Foundation Pod.

You Have:

• Leadership and Tech Experience:

• 10+ years of hands-on experience in software development, with a focus on building and operating highly scalable distributed systems.
• 5+ years of direct experience managing and mentoring high-performing engineering teams.

• Deep experience in the payments domain, specifically in fraud detection, chargeback mitigation, anti-money laundering (AML), or risk engine architecture.
• Experience building and scaling real-time risk or fraud platforms at a global scale.
• A strong track record of recruiting, developing, and retaining exceptional engineering talent.
• Excellent communication skills, capable of articulating complex technical trade-offs and project status to technical peers, product managers, and executive leadership.
• Familiarity with various global payment methods (e.g., credit cards, ACH, digital wallets, regional banking transfers) and the complexities of international funds acquisition.

For roles that are based at our headquarters in San Mateo, CA: The starting base pay for this position is as shown below. The actual base pay is dependent upon a variety of job-related factors such as professional background, training, work experience, location, business needs and market demand. Therefore, in some circumstances, the actual salary could fall outside of this expected range. This pay range is subject to change and may be modified in the future. All full-time employees are also eligible for equity compensation and for benefits as described on this page.

Annual Salary Range

$345,040—$399,420 USD

Roles that are based in an office are onsite Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, with optional presence on Monday and Friday (unless otherwise noted).
